“Fifteen-year-old Hatsuko lives with her irresponsible elder brother after their parents’ absence. Struggling with poverty and isolation, she finds solace in Mishima, a classmate who supports her dream of attending high school. However, her brother’s reckless behavior forces her to abandon her ambitions. As Mishima moves on to high school, Hatsuko works at a factory. 母に先立たれ、その後父も蒸発してしまった15歳の初子（東亜優）は、高校を中退した兄（塩谷瞬）と二人で暮らしていた。彼女は同級生の三島君（佐野和真）と一緒に東高を受験する約束をし、勉強まで教えてもらうのだが、彼女の家には高校に進学するお金はない。アルバイトの帰り道でも彼女は日々、そのことが気にかかり……。
