I always question a movie when I see them portray most of the Japanese as not wanting to go to war. SOME of the Admirals knew better, but the Bushido Code was alive in well in most of the ranks and they were excited for a chance to defeat the Americans. They viewed us as cowboys with a glass jaw. Just hit us ones REALLY hard and we would sue for peace. This reeks of revisionist history. They make it sound like everyone wanted peace and were forced to do this. Absolutely not true.

The battle was lost before it begun. The US had broken Japanese encryption on their wireless coms, so the knew ahead of time. They moved all their carriers away from Hawaii, put them into training positions too far for the Japanese planes to reach even if they were spotted. US left some ships in port as bait to prevent the mission from being aborted.
If the strike took out 3 US carriers, it would have had the desired effect of keeping US power out of the pacific.
