This was made the year I was born. And to see Mifune at the start of what would become an astonishing career..well, that's just such a treat. And at this point, (1948) the Mifune we would all come to love – was 'still in development''. But for all that dapper dan gravely ill yakuza, you could sense what was going to unfold with his screen persona.
The doc is very rough on him, he has an unfortunate way of expressing himself, hurtful..he says the truth but he cuts liek knife. I believe, the yakuza is lonely. He goes for a drink with the doctor because he is lonely and he feels that the doctor cares even though he is tough and rude when he speaks.
Matsunaga is definitely interesting. He is too afraid to admit that he's dying. After all he's fighting a invisible enemy, one he can't fight at all, not with knives and guns at least. He feels powerless so he needs to assert dominance over people. Actually, he was going fine until Okada appeared, since Matsunaga threw that flower into the dirty water he was doomed to fail and die a struggling death. Still, he died how he though it was meant to be, and covered by that white paint, maybe he was still to naive, pure to some extent, I don't know.

Very touching movie.
Very Powerful scene.
After I first saw this film, I would occasionally grunt like Takashi Shimura when I got annoyed. It sounds so funny to me.
Kurosawa loves those shots in the rain, something so comforting about them 😍

I love these movies so much
