Hiro Sanada had a huge hand in the authenticity of this show. As Producer, he hired Japanese historians / specialists in authenticity to ensure it was as accurate as can be.
I have a few favourite characters but won't give any spoilers – suffice to say there are going to be casualties, so be careful who you ally yourself to.
You've probably worked out that Yabushige is self serving. And Tornaga is playing chess while all around him are playing chequers. Pay close attention to these 2 things & you can't go far wrong.

A lot of the characters are based on historical people. Toranaga = Tokugawa Ieyasu Blackthorn based on William Adams.
Did you twig that by teaching Toranaga to dive served 2 purposes. To get Blackthorn to bathe and at the same time wear him out for the race.
